UN Day at PRIMA
On Wednesday, 13th November 2019 PRIMA had its annual UN Day celebration.
Upon compiling the list of nationalities found in each class, the groups were all appointed the job of representing one. Their role in this student-organised event was to introduce other members of the body, parents and teachers to what their country has to offer. The PRIMA body wanted the event to highlight their belief that the recognition of different cultures is crucial to one’s development as informed and critical students. They presented this through an afternoon of games, food, posters and music.
The countries were assigned as such (with Y11 being divided amongst Upper Secondary)
7A Ukraine
7B Azerbaijan
8A Turkey
8B Greece
9 France
10 Australia
12 UAE/China
13 Serbia
The different countries displayed on UN Day were found in the year groups’ classrooms and the preparation and effort put into each one became evident. Parents and guests from other Belgrade international schools came to show their appreciation for the students’ determination to produce the best possible displays through a vote. Each individual was offered the opportunity of placing a vote for the nation they believed was most deserving of a prize; upon counting the tallies, both, Years 9 and 12 received 33 votes- making them the winners of our event.
The success of the celebration was arguably a result of our students’ eagerness to embrace our cultural differences. As an international school, PRIMA understands the importance of celebrating the various nations here- as well as their cultures and traditions. The acknowledgment and honouring of cultural diversity is of paramount significance. It can dispel the formation of prejudicial views and days/events dedicated to the celebration of a variety of traditions encourages the questioning- as well as the developing in awareness of issues surrounding equity and equality. We believe that our apprehension of these aforementioned terms is vital for ensuring that PRIMA remains an accepting, multinational educational institution.
