The Dark Side of Makeup : The Dangers of Using Makeup

Every girl wants to use makeup or to know to to apply it. It gives people a way to express themselves or to express their creativity. With every good, almost harmless seeming thing, comes the dark side.

In many parts of the world, animals in laboratories are still suffering and dying due to being tested on by cosmetics such as lipstick and shampoo. They have chemicals forced down their throats and dripped into their eyes. The estimate number of animals used to test makeup is about 100,000-200,000 every year. This includes animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice.

Not only is makeup tested on animals, there are also many toxins added into makeup itself. Such toxins may cause cancer, which has happened before. Some toxic ingredients like asbestos are added during the manufacturing process, while product makers put others in purposefully to help with absorption, shine, shimmer, or a non greasy feel. Scientist say that asbestos can later show up on your skin and body.

Acne cosmetics are a form of acne, triggered by the use of certain cosmetic products. It is linked to certain ingredients that cause comedones formation (a blockage in the pore) and typically presents as small rash-like bumpy pimples. A common misconception is that the makeup physically blocks the pore, whereas actually the block is made of dead skin cells.

Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when a person has become sensitised to an ingredient that has been applied to the skin. A red, itchy rash sometimes associated with swelling or blisters.

Thankfully, many of the side effects involved with people using makeup can be resolved. Rather than caking harmful makeup on their faces every day, adults and teens should limit the amount of makeup worn. They should also focus on proper skin care, helping them have beautiful skin naturally.
