Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras also known as Shrove Tuesday is a day that people from all around the world celebrate and not only in French speaking countries. On that day people eat food with lots of fat in it because in French it means Fat Tuesday.elebrations are prepared two weeks before the day. Mardi Gras is not the fixed day, it changes every year. It can occur on any Tuesday from February 3rd through March 9th. It depends on the day of Easter. This year it was celebrated on March 5th all around the world.
The food that people eat on Mardi Gras are pancakes, fried breads, pastries made with sugar and eggs, candies, waffles…
Mardi Gras has also its specific colours that people wear: purple that symbolize justice, green faith and golden power.
Usually there are carnivals in the streets. Carnival comes from Italian “carne vale” which means goodbye flesh. Carnival is an important celebration with different costumes. The biggest carnivals are held in Nice, France, New Orleans, USA and Sidney, Australia.
We celebrated Mardi Gras with the speech during the lunch break. Students who talked about this holiday were Andre (Year 7B), Greatness (Year 11) and Milica (Year 13). We also had pancakes for lunch and our French teacher prepared waffles for us.
It was a funny day when most of the students wore Mardi Gras colours and I hope that next year we can wear costumes.
