Saint Sava School Slava

Saint Sava’s Day

On January 27 every year, a special occasion is celebrated throughout all schools in Serbia. This event is known as “slava”, a Serbian Orthodox tradition which glorifies patron saints. On that day specifically, slava which is celebrated is called Saint Sava’s Day. Sava (also known by his original name Rastko) was a Serbian prince and Orthodox monk who helped reform Serbian society at the time. One of the ways in which he did this was by reforming the educational system, which is why Saint Sava’s Day is considered a schools’ slava.

This year in Prima we decided to be creative with the celebration so Current Affairs Club stepped in to help organise the event. While we respected the tradition of having “žito” (wheat, served as a religious offering) at slava, we also decided to have a small musical performance as well. After a duet “Ko udara tako pozno”, everyone had a chance to contribute to the event by singing Saint Sava’s hymn. Even though not all of the people were familiar with the song, lyrics were printed out beforehand for everyone. As this was one of the first events which Current Affairs Club organised with the aim to bring different cultures together, we are very satisfied with the outcome and cannot wait for more events like this.
